Passop's Chairperson, Braam Hanekom, is honoured with the 2008 Inyathelo Award for Youth in Philanthropy.

Braam Hanekom has won The Inyathelo Award for Youth in Philanthropy for his vital role in the ongoing development of South Africa. “It is of utmost importance that we recognise and honour those individuals who, through a commitment to really building South Africa, give back and encourage others to give,” said Shelagh Gastrow, Executive Director of Inyathelo.

Hanekom founded People Against Suffering, Suppression, Oppression and Poverty (PASSOP) to protect the rights of refugees in South Africa. He sold his business to fund PASSOP’s work which has been instrumental in helping refugees in the Cape Town area.

“PASSOP provides not only humanitarian assistance to immigrant and refugee communities for immediate relief and support, but it also engages in advocacy work around policy in this area at the national and provincial levels to ensure that immigrant and refugee populations are afforded basic human rights,” said Hanekom.
